The Closed Ruy Lopez played to the letter of this repertoire for eleven moves, and then the plan the whole opening is for. Karpov closes the centre, takes the a-file, buries Black's rook with a bishop on a7, and only then turns to the king. Unzicker resigned on move 44 with every piece still on the board and nothing to do with any of them.
