Who runs the app

woodpushr, the chess app at [OWNER: site address — the Vercel production domain for now, until a custom one], is run and sold by [OWNER: legal name, from NEXT_PUBLIC_SELLER_NAME], a sole proprietor located in the United States and trading as woodpushr. Postal address: [OWNER: postal address, from NEXT_PUBLIC_SELLER_ADDRESS]. Email: ashe.wooo@gmail.com, which is the quickest way to reach us about anything, including a complaint.

Who these terms are with

These terms are an agreement between you and the seller named above, trading as woodpushr (“we”, “us”), for the use of the app (“the app”). By using the app you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

You need to be at least 14 to use the app, wherever you live. In the United States, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) also means nobody under 13 may use it in any case. To subscribe to Pro you need to be an adult, or to have the permission of a parent or guardian, who is then responsible for the subscription.

What the app is

A place to play and study chess: games against the Stockfish engine, which runs inside your own browser; games against a friend on the same device; puzzles; an opening trainer; and a review of any game you have played, with every move graded by the engine. You can also bring in your games from chess.com, and play and review games on Lichess once you log in there.

The engine's grades and suggestions are there to help you learn. They are an engine's opinion and can be wrong, and nothing in the app is a guarantee of any result.

Your account

You don't need to sign up. On your first visit the app makes you an anonymous account, kept in this browser, so your games and progress can be saved straight away. That account is only as durable as the browser: clear the site's data, or switch browsers, and an anonymous account can't be reached again. An anonymous account that hasn't been used for 12 months is deleted.

You can sign in with Google at any time, from your profile. That links the account you already have to your Google account, so the same games and settings follow you to any device you sign in on. You are responsible for keeping your Google account secure. A Google sign-in is required to subscribe to Pro, so that what you pay for can't be lost with a browser's data.

You can delete your account, and everything saved under it, from your profile at any time. What we store about your account, and why, is set out in the privacy policy.

Free and Pro

The app is free to use. The free plan includes 3 full game reviews each calendar month (a game already reviewed costs nothing to open again) and drills for any opening, up to 10 lines a day, counted from your local midnight. The lessons for every opening, making an opening your own, the study queue and your daily streak are open to everyone.

Pro is the paid plan. It removes the monthly review limit and the daily drill limit. It costs US$5 a month or US$40 a year, charged in US dollars. Any tax that applies where you live, such as VAT or sales tax, is calculated at checkout, and the total you will pay is shown on the checkout page before you pay.

Your first Pro subscription starts with a 7-day free trial. You give a payment method at checkout, but nothing is charged during the trial. Before the trial ends we email you to say when the first charge will be and how much it is, and your profile shows the date. Cancel before then and you pay nothing; otherwise the first charge is taken when the trial ends. A trial is only offered once per account.

We may change what each plan includes, or Pro's price. A price change never applies to a period you have already paid for, and we will tell you at least [OWNER: notice period for price changes, e.g. 30 days] before it applies to you, so you can cancel before it does.

Paying, renewing and cancelling

Payments are handled by Stripe. You pay on Stripe's checkout page, and your card details go to Stripe and never to us.

Pro is a subscription. It renews automatically at the end of each billing period, monthly or yearly as you chose, and your payment method is charged for the next one, until you cancel. Your profile shows the date it renews.

You can cancel at any time: press Manage on your profile to open Stripe's customer portal, where you can also change your card. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have paid for, and you won't be charged again.

If a renewal payment fails, Stripe will try the card again. You keep Pro until the end of the period you had already paid for; if payment still hasn't gone through by then, the account returns to the free plan.

When you can have your money back, including your legal right to withdraw within 14 days, is set out in the refund policy.

Lichess and chess.com

Lichess and chess.com are separate services with their own terms, which apply to what you do there. This app is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by either of them. Logging in to Lichess from the app lets it play games on your Lichess account on your behalf, and only that; you can log out at any time from your profile, which revokes that permission.

Don't use the app to get an engine's help in a game against another person. The app keeps its engine off during a live Lichess game, and working around that is against both these terms and Lichess's own fair-play rules.

Using the app fairly

Please don't: try to get Pro without paying for it; interfere with the app, its servers or its accounts, or anyone else's use of them; make automated requests to the app at a volume a person wouldn't; or use it to break the law. We may suspend or close an account that does, and we will tell you why unless the law stops us.

Your games, and the software

The games you play, import and review are yours. You give us permission to store them and to process them in the ways needed to run the app for you — saving them to your account, and showing them back to you on your devices — and for nothing else.

The app is built partly on free software. Each part is used under its own licence, and that licence, not these terms, governs what you may do with it. Every author and licence is credited in the piece credits and the sound credits. These parts are under the GNU General Public License (GPL) or the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL):

The chess engine:Stockfish, GPLv3. The app runs the “lite” builds of Stockfish.js 18 (source), which are built from Stockfish itself (source). We serve those builds exactly as they are published, without modifying them.

Pieces: Cburnett by Colin M.L. Burnett, GPLv2+ (source). It comes inside the react-chessboard library, which draws it from code, and the app shows it only in place of one of its own pieces that fails to load. The app's own piece sets are ours, not free software.

Sounds, until October 2026: Piano, Arcade and Futuristic by Enigmahack, AGPLv3+ (source), from Lichess's sound themes, unmodified. The app no longer ships them. Its board sounds are now cut from recordings published on Freesound under CC0 or CC BY 4.0, each credited in the sound credits.

Our offer of the source: for at least three years from the last time we distribute a part listed above, we will give anyone who asks a complete copy of its corresponding source code, including the exact Stockfish build the app runs: free of charge by email or download, or on a physical medium for no more than it costs us to make and send it. Write to ashe.wooo@gmail.com.

Everything else in the app — its own code, design and text, and the reaction sounds — belongs to the seller named at the top of this page, all rights reserved.

Stopping

You can stop using the app at any time, and delete your account from your profile. If you have Pro, cancel it first so you are not charged again.

We may stop offering the app, or part of it. If we stop offering Pro, no new charges are taken — not for a renewal, and not at the end of a trial — and you keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Warranties and liability

The app is provided as it is and as available. We work to keep it running and your data safe, but we can't promise it will always be available, free of errors, or that saved data can never be lost.

If you are a consumer, you have the legal guarantees that consumer law where you live gives you (in the EU and the UK, that a digital service matches its description and works as it should), and nothing in these terms limits them or any other right that law says can't be excluded. Within those limits, we are not responsible for losses that were not foreseeable when you started using the app, or that come from a game's result, an engine's suggestion, or services we don't control, such as Lichess, chess.com, Google or Stripe. We are always responsible for harm we cause deliberately or through gross negligence.

Changes, law and disputes

We may update these terms. When we do, we will change the effective date at the top of this page, and if the change matters to how you use the app or what you pay, we will tell you in the app before it applies.

These terms are governed by the law of the District of Columbia, in the United States. If you are a consumer living in the European Union or the United Kingdom, that choice takes nothing away from you: you keep every protection the mandatory law of the country where you live gives you, you can bring a claim in the courts of that country, and a claim against you as a consumer can only be brought there. Otherwise, the courts of the District of Columbia decide any dispute.

If something goes wrong, please write to ashe.wooo@gmail.comfirst: most problems are quicker to fix than to argue about. If we can't settle it between us, the consumer authority where you live may be able to help.

A first draft, written from what the app actually does and not yet reviewed. Every highlighted [OWNER: …] note is a detail still to be filled in or confirmed. Effective from [OWNER: effective date].
